Panel Session: Extra! Extra! AI & the Future of Journalism

SUMMARY

How is AI changing journalism and what could this mean for the healthy functioning of democratic societies? The rapid pace of technological change is transforming how news is created, shared, and understood – disrupting the newsroom as well as our shared information ecosystem.

Advances in machine learning and natural language processing allow news organisations to increase automation, personalise news, and experiment with new formats via chatbots and synthetic avatars. But those same advances enable mis- and dis-information, deepfakes, and targeted attacks on journalists.

This panel will go beyond discussing ‘shiny new tools’ to consider what we want from the future of news in an era of AI. For instance, what happens to our shared understanding of the world if we use AI to hyper-personalise news? How can we ensure citizens and communities are represented in all their diversity and their voices are heard when AI increasingly automates decisions? How can we ensure editorial integrity when deploying generative language or image models like ChatGPT and DALL-E? How might they disrupt our notions of accuracy, impartiality, and accountability?

Join our experts to learn about how the BBC is experimenting with AI and consider what responsible AI in journalism means.
