Founder and Impact Lead, Scientia Scripta

Panel: Reframing the Narrative On The Human

Edwin Colyer is Founder and Impact Lead at Scientia Scripta, a values-led research and innovation support agency on a mission to democratise science and innovation, for good. His company works with universities, research institutes, funders and innovative  businesses, using creative communications and community engagement to drive meaningful impact.

Edwin’s interest in the ethics of AI stems from his time at Manchester Metropolitan University (2016-22) where he supported computer scientists to consider the deeper ethics of their research and impact. Spinning this expertise into Scientia Scripta, Edwin has worked with colleagues to train staff at the Alan Turing Institute on public engagement with AI, helping to shape the Turing’s successful funding call for public engagement projects in 2022.

Edwin currently advises an EPSRC-funded project conceived to empower the Greater Manchester data science and AI research communities to engage meaningfully with traditionally marginalised communities and embed co-production methods into individual and institutional research processes and governance. Edwin has co-authored papers and participated in policy roundtables to explore the ethical imperatives and implementation challenges for more participatory approaches to AI research, development, deployment and monitoring.
